Just saw a cockroachIt is very important to control cockroach activity. They are extremely unsanitary. They spread their feces, salmonella and other bacteria that cause food poisoning. They can aggravate asthma and respiratory conditions and trigger allergic reactions.

The cockroach you are most likely to see in homes in the Detroit area is the German Cockroach. Adults are generally narrow and about five eighths of an inch long. They tend to be light brown or golden in color, with two darker brown strips running the length of the body. The young tend to be more oval in shape and darker in color. The size of the young, which are called nymphs, varies in size depending on their age. Nymphs start out less than one-sixteenth of an inch long and grow to nearly adult size.

A female German cockroach will live for about two hundred days. In that time, she will produce four to six egg capsules. Each capsule will contain thirty to forty eggs. The eggs will hatch in about a month, between twenty-eight to thirty days. Newly hatched cockroaches can begin laying eggs in as little as forty days.

Cockroaches are ‘hitchhikers’. They can migrate from house to house. But they are more likely to ride in on your clothing. They can come in on the groceries, hidden in appliances or furniture or electronics, or come from a friend’s house in your child’s book bag. Once in your home, they will tend to be most active in your kitchen or bathroom. They tend to stay within five feet of food and water sources. They will hide in cracks and crevices, especially in cabinetry and under appliances. Cockroaches are nocturnal. They like to hide in close, tight spaces and tend to avoid light and movement. If you are seeing them during the day, they may have been crowded out of their favored hiding places by other cockroaches.

Sanitation is always a good first step to controlling any pest problem. A cleaner, less cluttered home offers fewer opportunities for food and shelter. Because cockroaches can migrate from home to home, an outside barrier treatment can be helpful. Treating the interior with a pesticide can greatly reduce the cockroach population and make the home more pleasant and comfortable to live in. Use of insect growth regulators will slow the growth of nymphs and improve the effectiveness of follow-up treatments using baits.
